What technology do I REALLY need for my podcast?
Updated: Jun 11, 2021

The thing that I often get asked about podcasting is 'what equipment do I need'?
To that, I often give the unhelpful answer....it depends.
So today, I'm going to share what I personally use on my podcast along with costs and links.
As a disclaimer: I am not paid to refer any of these things, I just suggest them to get started.
Microphone - $249.99
A USB mic that can plug in and record right to your computer is a great place to start. I use the Blue Yeticaster but a regular Blue Yeti Microphone works well. I like the Yeticaster as it keeps my mic off the desk and helps keep it stable and at mouth level:
Editing and Recording - $129
I use a program called 'Hindenburg' which is pricey. However, if you're serious about a podcast then it's worth your investment. It has tons of excellent features to help you cut out background noise (among other annoying things) and has made some episodes of mine that were bad quality into usable quality (somedays, that's all you want)
I'd get the journalist version, and upgrade later if you need to.

The other easy-option for Mac users is garageband. It's simple and usually included on any apple computer. It also comes with a bunch of music that you can use for your podcast that's royalty-free.
Music - $191 for the year
I am fortunate to have some talented musical friends who made my music for me. That being said, I've been impressed with the selection of Story Blocks - which has audio, video and transition clips that are high quality.

Artwork - $16.99/month
If you make one splurge, I'd sign up for a Canva pro account. Not only does it have a ton of templates to choose from, but you can also resize images quickly to your podcast specs AND you can upload your brand guide to automatically transform an existing design into one that is in line with your brand. You can also create quick social media assets that save you hours of design work...pretty cool, right?
Hosting - $15/month to start
There are a lot of things you can do without when it comes to podcasting...a hosting site isn't one of them. This allows you to disseminate your podcast to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and anywhere else you want to distribute your podcast to.
